On September 21, 2009, students at Scarsdale Middle School will be asked to sign the following promise during their lunch periods in the Great Hall.
"In celebration of International Day of Peace and International Cease
Fire Day, I agree to lay down my 'words as weapons.' I promise to do my
best to eliminate words that might hurt someone, judge someone, or put
someone down. I understand that words can be just as painful as weapons
and will try to cease using words that may judge or degrade someone. I
will do my best to make sure that I am treating others with respect and
dignity. I pledge to be part of the effort to build a peaceful community
of understanding and kindness at Scarsdale Middle School."
